Empow(her)ment Finally!
Well, like I say in my home page for this blog, I intended to write here on things that interest me and move me. Although, I have been wanting to post for quite a while now, I couldn’t do it for some odd reason. Anyways, today was different because the top news caught my attention like no other has in recent time. The news of course is about the women’s reservation bill being finally passed in the Rajya Sabha. This in my opinion is one of the most important and transformational pieces of legislation after the right to information act. I wouldn’t be wrong in proclaiming it as a revisit to 15-Aug-1947. It will help India become the tolerant, inclusive & developed state that we all dream of - far away from the parochial beliefs of the likes of Raj Thackray. Yes, there are a lot of pot holes along the path ahead. We have seen that in the implementation of reserved seats in panchayat elections under the panchayati raj system. The challenges in getting this to work should in no way take away the importance of the moment. It is momentous occasion which will be hailed by future generations who will have inherited a far more tolerant and equal society. I have never voted in elections in India; I wasn’t in India last year when Manmohan was voted back. Well, it is these sensible pieces of legislation that would make me vote for him.
